The Three Most Important Features of Any Car Stereo

Are you trying to achieve the best in-car audio possible? If so, you need to understand the three most important features of any car stereo. In understanding these features, you will understand what you need to buy in order to achieve a decent sound set-up.

The Head Unit
Without the head unit, you wouldn’t have a functioning car stereo at all. Imagine it as the brain behind the entire set up.

Now, there are hundreds of different types of head unit out there, so finding the one that’s right for you isn’t always easy. Here are a few things that you should consider when choosing a new head unit for
car audio UK:

1. Does it play the right files? You may have an extensive CD collection, or you might have moved your collection over to MP3 file formal. Whatever you use, your head unit needs to be compatible.
2. Do you need it to connect to your other devices? Nowadays, the head units can connect to a range of devices from your mobile phone to your mobile data provider.
3. Does the head unit have sufficient power to run the speakers? If you have powerful speakers, you need to ensure that the head unit has sufficient power to run the speakers (the amp can take a lot of the work, though).

The Speakers
Car manufactures do not spend a lot of money on their speakers. For this reason, it’s always advisable to buy new speakers to replace your factory-installed speakers.

If you love music and you enjoy listening to all the nuance in a tune, then opt for separate tweeters and sub-woofers. This is relatively common in car audio UK because music is something many commuters love.

The Amplifier
Finally, and as mentioned above, you need to ensure that your speakers have enough power. The head unit undertakes part of this task, but if you have exceptionally powerful speakers, then you will need to use an amplifier too. This will help to ensure that your speakers have enough power to run.

Aftermarket Speakers Better Than Original

OK, that heading is probably not true if you drive around in a brand new luxury limo. Some of those kind of cars have a twenty speaker or more and a powerful separate amp.

But the majority of medium to cheap runabouts are fitted with sound systems that are about as cheap as the production car plant can find.

Also, over time speakers will lose clarity and aftermarket replacements will make a huge difference to the quality of sound. Even sticking with the cheaper coaxial speakers will be an improvement.

Any improvement to a car sound system will always involve some anxiety about cost. Like so many things in life, you get what you pay for and the bigger your budget the better.

If you really want a huge improvement then look at the exercise in new component parts spread over a few monthly paydays.

You may want to start with the new car speakers installation and continue for a month or so with the creaking old header unit. The next swap could be the header unit and finally at least one new sub-woofer.
The best quality component speakers will get you on your way to a stunning new custom built musical experience.

One advantage that more expensive premium speakers have is the quality of the material surrounding them. The foam and paper of cheaper models will deteriorate faster than the far more solid ones.
Just replacing the factory speakers won’t mean much if the low powered head and amp are not also replaced by better quality.

Two way and three way speakers give a much crisper sound than the full range ones that are probably the type fitted in your vehicle now. They may cost a bit but the improvement in sound quality will more than make up for that.

To exceed even that quality, you need to be not looking at two or three way but dedicated woofers and tweeters. But if you choose this route then you’ll almost certainly need some professional help.

How to Find the Right Car Audio Advice

If you're reading this article, then we understand your frustration. We know that you’ve probably been looking to the answer to an audio question and that you’ve asked in a number of different places and everyone is giving you the wrong answers.

You’ve probably asked on the online forums. What happens here is one of two things:

1. Your question accidentally triggers and argument and everyone becomes passive aggressive and starts insulting each other.

2. Someone answers the question in a way that sounds technically correct. They might even say something like, “I’m an audio technician”, which more often than not means they studied a semester at university and then changed courses.

Because they sound like they know what they’re talking about, everyone agrees. You then follow the advice and learn that it was nonsense and you’ve wasted your time, and sometimes your money.

Sometimes the forums have genuine experts with fantastic advice, but because of the vast number of people who think they’re experts when they’re not, it’s really difficult to work out who to listen too, so unless you have some background in audio technology, avoid the forums, or at least take an objective view of the advice.

Next, there’s your friend Jim. He knows everything about everything. Well, you already know that you should ignore that.

Finally, there’s the audio salesman in your local electronic chain store. These people will have some knowledge, but it will be basic. They're worth listening to if you want answers to simple questions.

However, for any complex questions, there’s really only one group of people you should be talking to: car audio experts. You'll find these people at the car audio London centres and in other big cities too. These people tend to have serious audio qualifications and tend to have worked in the industry for a decent amount of time. The longer the audio centre has been open, the better they are likely to be because businesses that offer poor advice would soon go out of business.

So, for your complex questions, you really should talk to the experts. These are the retailers who specialise in car audio equipment, including its installation.
