What Are the Cheapest Ways to Improve Your In-Car Sound System?

Are you looking to improve the quality of your in-car sound system on a budget? If so, you're in luck. There are a few things that you can do that are relatively cheap. Today, we are going to look at a few ways that you can boost your sound system on a budget. Each option will cost less than £50, so are reasonable for the majority of people.

Increase the Amount of Baffle & Sound Proofing within the Car
Many people don’t realise, but a key reason that the sound is poor in a car is that there’s a lot of exposed metal. This metal allows sound waves to bounce around the car and interfere with each other. At these times, you hear distortions, such as a tinny/bouncy sound interspersed within the music.

In order to minimise this and to improve the quality of your sound system, you can increase the amount of baffle and sound proofing in the car. Simply by adding a scrap of carpet to the foot wells, you'll help to improve the sound quality. However, genuine sound deadening material is relatively cheap too, and you can certainly buy enough to do a decent job on your car for less than £50.

Change Your Speakers
You might not realise it, but changing your speakers can be relatively cheap. You have two options:

1. Add tweeters and a sub-woofer to your existing coaxial speakers. This will give you a broader range of sounds. It is the more expensive option, but you can create an excellent car sound system.

2. Change your existing coaxial speakers. These will cost you less than £50 for a decent pair. You'll certainly be able to tell the difference between these and the speakers that the car manufacture uses. Manufacture speakers are almost always low quality.

The Three Most Important Features of Any Car Stereo

Are you trying to achieve the best in-car audio possible? If so, you need to understand the three most important features of any car stereo. In understanding these features, you will understand what you need to buy in order to achieve a decent sound set-up.

The Head Unit
Without the head unit, you wouldn’t have a functioning car stereo at all. Imagine it as the brain behind the entire set up.

Now, there are hundreds of different types of head unit out there, so finding the one that’s right for you isn’t always easy. Here are a few things that you should consider when choosing a new head unit for
car audio UK:

1. Does it play the right files? You may have an extensive CD collection, or you might have moved your collection over to MP3 file formal. Whatever you use, your head unit needs to be compatible.
2. Do you need it to connect to your other devices? Nowadays, the head units can connect to a range of devices from your mobile phone to your mobile data provider.
3. Does the head unit have sufficient power to run the speakers? If you have powerful speakers, you need to ensure that the head unit has sufficient power to run the speakers (the amp can take a lot of the work, though).

The Speakers
Car manufactures do not spend a lot of money on their speakers. For this reason, it’s always advisable to buy new speakers to replace your factory-installed speakers.

If you love music and you enjoy listening to all the nuance in a tune, then opt for separate tweeters and sub-woofers. This is relatively common in car audio UK because music is something many commuters love.

The Amplifier
Finally, and as mentioned above, you need to ensure that your speakers have enough power. The head unit undertakes part of this task, but if you have exceptionally powerful speakers, then you will need to use an amplifier too. This will help to ensure that your speakers have enough power to run.

Aftermarket Speakers Better Than Original

OK, that heading is probably not true if you drive around in a brand new luxury limo. Some of those kind of cars have a twenty speaker or more and a powerful separate amp.

But the majority of medium to cheap runabouts are fitted with sound systems that are about as cheap as the production car plant can find.

Also, over time speakers will lose clarity and aftermarket replacements will make a huge difference to the quality of sound. Even sticking with the cheaper coaxial speakers will be an improvement.

Any improvement to a car sound system will always involve some anxiety about cost. Like so many things in life, you get what you pay for and the bigger your budget the better.

If you really want a huge improvement then look at the exercise in new component parts spread over a few monthly paydays.

You may want to start with the new car speakers installation and continue for a month or so with the creaking old header unit. The next swap could be the header unit and finally at least one new sub-woofer.
The best quality component speakers will get you on your way to a stunning new custom built musical experience.

One advantage that more expensive premium speakers have is the quality of the material surrounding them. The foam and paper of cheaper models will deteriorate faster than the far more solid ones.
Just replacing the factory speakers won’t mean much if the low powered head and amp are not also replaced by better quality.

Two way and three way speakers give a much crisper sound than the full range ones that are probably the type fitted in your vehicle now. They may cost a bit but the improvement in sound quality will more than make up for that.

To exceed even that quality, you need to be not looking at two or three way but dedicated woofers and tweeters. But if you choose this route then you’ll almost certainly need some professional help.
